Aussie Warbird

Historical testimony: This Nose Art belonged to the B-24M Liberator that first landed on the 9th of October 1945 on the rebuilt strip at Balikpapan to join the R.A.A.F. heavy bomber Squadron No 24. Previously, in February of that year, this same B-24M A72-166 was delivered to No 12 Sqn before serving with Sqn No 24 for the rest of the War. It shows a kookaburra astride a boomerang on its side. The Australian iconic bird was chosen by the crew because it is a natural predator which feeds on snakes and vermin. An interesting feature of Australian Liberators was that individual emblems were almost invariably only carried on the Starboard (right) side of the aircraft.
